Multiple x-ray bursts from long discharges in air

چکیده
A lightning surge generator generates a high-voltage surge with a 1.2μs rise time. The generator fed a spark gap of two pointed electrodes at 0.7 to 1.2 m distances. Gap breakdown occurred between 0.1 and 3μs after the maximum generator voltage of approximately 850 kV. Various scintillator detectors with different response times recorded bursts of hard radiation in nearly all surges. The bursts were detected over the time span between approximately half of the maximum surge voltage and full gap breakdown. The consistent timing of the bursts with the high-voltage surge excluded background radiation as the source for the high intensity pulses. In spite of the symmetry of the gap, negative surges produced more intense radiation than positive. This has been attributed to additional positive discharges from the measurement cabinet which occurred for negative surges. Some hard radiation signals were equivalent to several megaelectronvolts. Pile-up occurs of lesser energy x-ray quanta, but still with a large fraction of these with an energy of the order of 100 keV. The bursts occurred within the 4 ns time resolution of the fastest detector. The relation between the energy of the x-ray quanta and the signal from the scintillation detector is quite complicated, as shown by the measurements.

Energy Distribution of X-rays Produced by Meter-Long Negative Discharges in Air
The energy deposited from X-rays generated by 1 m long laboratory sparks in air created by 950 kV negative lightning impulses on scintillated detectors was measured. Assuming the X-ray energy detected in such sparks results from the accumulation of multiple photons at the detector having a certain energy distribution, an experiment was designed in such a way to characterize their distribution p...

Systematic variations of average observational characteristics and correlation properties between different parameters of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with time from 1991 April to 1994 September are revealed. It is hard to explain the observed long-term variability by variations of experimental conditions. The variability of GRB properties with the time scale of months to years, together with the si...

متن کاملA half - a - day long thermonuclear X - ray burst from KS 1731 − 260
We report on an approximately twelve hour long X-ray flare from the low-mass X-ray binary KS 1731−260. The flare has a rise time of less than 13min and declines exponentially with a decay time of 2.7 hours. The flare emission is well described by black-body radiation with peak temperature of 2.4 keV. The total energy release from the event is 10 erg (for an assumed distance of 7 kpc). The flare...
متن کاملRecurrent very - long type - I X - ray bursts in the low - mass X - ray binary 4 U 1636 – 53
Two flares with a duration of several hours are reported for the low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636–53. The characteristics of these flares (i.e., decay time scales, spectral softening, fluences) are very similar to the very long type-I X-ray bursts recently found in several other low-mass X-ray binaries, suggesting that the flares in 4U 1636–53 are also very long type-I X-ray bursts. This would mak...
